Discussion Questions
Why does Pastor Kyle keep calling 2 Samuel 5-10 a mountain range of the Old Testament? Why are these events important for what the Scriptures have to say about God’s plan to save through Christ?
Look at the gifts the exalted Christ gives to his church in Ephesians 4. How do these gifts bless you and equip you to do the work of the ministry?
In your own words, what is the work of the ministry Paul is describing in Ephesians 4:12? How are you taking part in this work? In what ways do you need to grow?
What’s the biggest hindrance for you serving the Lord the way Paul describes in Ephesians 4?
Choose one of David’s penitential psalms to read through (Psalm 6, 32, 38, 51, or 143) How does David’s example of repentance influence your understanding of the Christian life?
If the church is the fellowship of the repentant, how should this play out in our life together?
Who has helped you mature in Christ? How could you do this for a fellow church member?

Here are some discussion questions to help you reflect on the message:
1. How are you learning to trust more in God's word?
2. What passages of Scripture or doctrines seem least intuitive to you? What would it look like for you to grow in trusting God in these areas?
3. In what ways are you tempted to trust in the good things you do for God?
4. How do God's promises to David connect with God's great works of salvation in Scripture?
5. Pick two or three of the Scripture passages from this list, and spend some time meditating on them and praying through them.
6. What practical steps can you take this week to more consistently feed your soul on the good news of what God has done for you in Christ? Who might encourage you and keep you accountable to set your mind on these things?

If you'd like to watch a video of this morning's devotional on 2 Samuel 6 with extremely low production value, you can do that here. If you'd prefer the audio, you can find that here or in the podcast feed.
Here are a few discussion question to go with the devotional.
1. As you encounter worries during these days, are you taking them to the Lord? If not, what's keeping you from prayer?
2. What are you thankful for? Spend some time praying to God and thanking him for his gifts.
3. How can you cultivate a heart of thanksgiving for the gospel? What are some gospel promises that you find especially encouraging today?
4. What does pride look like in your inner monologue? How is pride expressed in your actions and words? For a starting point, you might think through the examples of Uzzah (a well-meaning ignoring of God's commands), Michal (cynically despising humility), and David (anger that God disrupted your plans). Does your pride tend to resemble one of those three?
5. How does pride keep you from joy in Christ? How does pride keep you from loving others?
6. What would it look like for you to humbly rejoice?
Sing "It is Well" as a way to express your thanks for the peace that comes through Christ's work.

1. What are the lessons of Abner’s and Joab’s character for us as Christians?
2. Are you ever guilty of using the gospel as a means to an end—the end of your own reputation—when people praise you for what is in fact God’s work in you?
3. How has this coronavirus tempted you to think more about what God can give than who God is?
4. What has God shown you over the last week?
I have finally included a recording of “The Sands of Time Are Sinking” that we regularly sing in our gatherings together. I think it’s helpful to think about that day when we finally see Jesus face to face and on that day we will have no regard for our glory but only for his. I look forward to singing it with you again in person very, very soon.

We thought about our tendency to despise the day of small things. Can you think of any other examples from God’s dealing with the world or his church in which we can see how God works through small, unnoticeable things at the moment?
If you get depressed at the apparent insignificance of some good work in which you are involved, how can you encourage yourself by what the Bible tells us about Christ’s return and the triumph of his kingdom?
We thought about how the things we look forward to oftentimes fail to live up to the hype, or at least are delayed; and even in the Christian life, we live in this period of “already and not yet.” So if this is the case, how can we look forward to things and enjoy the gifts and joys of this life while at the same time not be disappointed?
It was mentioned in the devotional how Paul encourages the Thessalonians with the promise of the coming of Jesus and there are references to it in almost every chapter. We were encouraged to find them. Here is the list of the references to the second coming of Christ that occur in each chapter:
1 Thessalonians: 1:10; 2:19; 3:11-13; 4:13-18; 5:23-24
2 Thessalonians: 1:7, 10; 2:8
